Earl’s Court is one of the most important interchange and branching stations on the south-west section of the Underground network, serving the District and Piccadilly lines in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Opened in 1871 as part of the Metropolitan District Railway (predecessor to the modern District line), it sits at a major junction where the District line splits into its three western branches towards Wimbledon, Richmond, and Ealing Broadway.

The station occupies a large elevated position above Earl’s Court Road on a viaduct, with a wide open-air station layout. It lies at the heart of a diverse, cosmopolitan neighbourhood known historically for its large international community — particularly Australian expatriates, who coined the affectionate nickname “Kangaroo Valley” for the surrounding streets — alongside a vibrant local restaurant, bar, and boutique scene.

For many years, the adjacent Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre was one of London’s principal large-scale venues for concerts, exhibitions, and events — a generation of music fans saw their favourite bands perform there. The exhibition centre has since been demolished, and the large surrounding site is undergoing a major long-term regeneration project.

District line

• Eastbound (towards Upminster): Gloucester Road (2 min) → South Kensington → Sloane Square → Victoria → St James’s Park → Westminster → Embankment → Temple → Blackfriars → Mansion House → Cannon Street → Monument → Tower Hill → Aldgate East → then on via West Ham to Upminster (approx. 55 min)
• Westbound — three branches from Earl’s Court:
  • To Wimbledon via West Brompton, Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green, Putney Bridge, East Putney, Southfields, Wimbledon Park (approx. 20 min)
  • To Ealing Broadway via West Kensington, Barons Court, Ravenscourt Park, Stamford Brook, Turnham Green, Acton Town, Ealing Common (approx. 25 min)

Piccadilly line

• Eastbound (towards Cockfosters): Barons Court (2 min) → Hammersmith → Acton Town → then north-east through Holloway Road, Arsenal, Finsbury Park, Manor House, Wood Green and on to Cockfosters (approx. 50 min)
• Westbound (towards Heathrow / Uxbridge): Gloucester Road (2 min) → South Kensington → Knightsbridge → Hyde Park Corner → Green Park → Piccadilly Circus → Leicester Square → then west from Acton Town to Heathrow (all terminals, approx. 45 min) or Uxbridge (approx. 45 min)
• Frequency: every 3–5 minutes at peak; key route for direct Heathrow access

Interchange Notes

Earl’s Court is the key junction for the District line’s three western branches. Check departure boards carefully for the correct branch (Wimbledon, Richmond, or Ealing Broadway). Both lines share platforms here, with separate platforms for each direction.

Holland Park 0.5 miles

A beautiful, tranquil park a short walk north, containing the remains of Holland House (a Jacobean mansion bombed in the Blitz), the atmospheric Japanese Kyoto Garden, peacocks roaming freely, woodland walks, and the open-air Holland Park Theatre, which hosts opera every summer season. A lovely green escape from the urban bustle.

Leighton House Museum 0.4 miles

The extraordinary former studio-home of Victorian artist Lord Frederic Leighton, featuring the magnificent Arab Hall — a breathtaking tiled room modelled on a Moorish palace and encrusted with blue Islamic tiles. One of the most unusual and atmospheric house museums in London. Admission charged.

Kensington High Street & Shopping 0.6 miles

A short walk north brings you to Kensington High Street, a lively shopping district with a good mix of high street names, independent boutiques, Whole Foods Market, and the atmospheric covered Kensington Market area.

Brompton Cemetery 0.3 miles

One of the Magnificent Seven Victorian garden cemeteries, Brompton Cemetery is a remarkable Grade I listed landscape containing the graves of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, nurse and activist Mary Seacole, and numerous other notable figures, within beautiful landscaped grounds open to the public.

Chelsea FC & Stamford Bridge 0.5 miles

The home of Chelsea Football Club is a short walk west, with stadium tours available on non-match days. The area around Fulham Road on match days is famously lively.

South Kensington Museums 0.8 miles

The world-class museum quarter — the Victoria & Albert Museum, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum — is a short walk or one stop east on the Piccadilly or District line to South Kensington.
